Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)

Add Time:2024/6/26 9:47:04

Duration

10 days course and examination

Suitable for

This course is suitable for individuals with ultrasonic testing experience, who are looking to expand their knowledge into advanced ultrasonic applications and gain a qualification in Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD).

If time is an issue, please consider our blended learning option - study theory and concepts when and where you choose, then join the classroom sessions for hands-on practical.

Course content

FREE PRE-COURSE ELEARNING PACKAGE - available only to students enrolling on this course:

Familiarise yourself with the theory and key concepts that will prepare you for the classroom training with the TOFD Pre-course eLearning Package.

The eLearning material is made available 30 days before the course start date, giving you plenty of time to build your confidence before you enter the classroom.

Classroom content

This course covers ToFD theory and principles of diffraction, ToFD hardware (pulsers, receivers, motor control, encoders), ToFD data acquisition and interpretation, ToFD techniques, and ToFD applications.

You will also learn about equipment selection, calibration and optimisation, optimising PCS and angles, flaw location and sizing, limitations of detection and resolution, codes and standards, and reporting.

The training is in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and ends with the certification examination.

Topics:

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the theoretical background and limitations of ToFD applications

  • Correctly select probe/wedge to examine welded butt joints

  • Calibrate and set up the ToFD ultrasonic equipment

  • Locate and evaluate flaws in the weld body, HAZ

  • Differentiate defects from geometric features

  • Analyse scan data for location and size of defects in typical welded butt joints

  • Understand and apply digital processing processes (SAFT, linearization, averaging, filters etc)

  • Compile written instruction

  • Meet the syllabus requirements for CSWIP

Certification/Awarding Body:

CSWIP

Entry Requirements

CSWIP candidates should be qualified to a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712 in Ultrasonic Testing.CSWIP certification is also available for candidates holding ASNT UT Welds.

It will be considered on an individual basis and evidence of training and experience presented to the training centre on application. Non-BS EN ISO 9712 certificate holders will be required to sit the CSWIP UT Welds Level 2 General Paper.

Please note: Inspectors who do not hold BS EN ISO 9712 Level 2 certification in ultrasonic inspection are required to view the CSWIP document.

The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is:

  • Level 1 - 80 hours (Direct Level 2: 120 hours)

  • Level 2 - 40 hours (Direct Level 2 - 104 hours for CSWIP

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:

Certification Requirements

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:

  • Level 1 - 1 month for CSWIP

  • Level 2 - 3 months (Direct Level 2 - 4 months for CSWIP)

Blended learning option: If a candidate is unable to attend the full 15 days in the classroom, then consider our blended learning option where theory and concepts

can be studied as eLearning.
